Inflation falls more than expected ahead of Fed meeting

Inflation expectations also drop, prompting calls for caution from the Fed

Year-on-year consumer price index (CPI) inflation in the US fell to 7.1% in November, lower than the consensus forecast among market participants.

Analysts had predicted CPI would come in at 7.3%, and core CPI at 6.1%. In the event, core CPI inflation over the year also beat expectations at 6%.

Month-on-month inflation was 0.1%. “The index for shelter was by far the largest contributor to the monthly all items increase, more than offsetting decreases in energy indexes,” said the US Bureau of
