Mikati denies claims he threatened to resign over investigation into Salameh

Lebanon’s prime minister denied interfering with a prosecutor’s investigation of the country’s central bank governor over alleged financial crimes today (January 12).

Prime minister Najib Mikati told a news conference that he had not told Lebanon’s chief prosecutor Ghassan Oueidat to end inquiries into governor Riad Salameh. Lebanese news outlet Al Akhbar alleged Mikati had threatened Oueidat that he would resign unless judge Jean Tannous halted his investigation, Reuters reported.
