Afghanistan’s frozen assets trigger controversy as harsh winter looms

Cash that is “desperately needed” by ordinary Afghans remains frozen in overseas central bank accounts

A group of US legislators is calling for the release of Afghanistan’s central bank reserves, as the country faces a harsh winter and the prospect of mass starvation.

On December 20, 48 members of Congress largely representing the progressive wing of the Democratic party called on US president Joe Biden and Treasury secretary Janet Yellen to unfreeze over $7 billion in assets belonging to Afghanistan’s central bank.
