Former Latvian governor must face prosecution, court rules

ECJ says Rimšēvičs does not have official immunity over alleged bribe-taking and money laundering

The European Union’s highest court has ruled that Latvia’s former central bank governor does not have immunity from prosecution on charges of corruption.

Lawyers for Ilmārs Rimšēvičs argued before the European Court of Justice that he enjoyed immunity from prosecution for acts carried out in office. Rimšēvičs was arrested in February 2018 on charges that he took bribes from a bank executive in return for favourable supervisory rulings.
