Lebanese politicians condemn governor for ending fuel subsidy

Salameh says he will not resume subsidy unless parliament allows use of mandatory reserves

Lebanon’s embattled central bank governor has defended his decision to end the national fuel subsidy after criticism from the country’s politicians.   

Governor Riad Salameh announced on August 11 that the Central Bank of Lebanon was ending its subsidy for fuel imports, saying reserves were dangerously low. Salameh told US-run broadcaster Radio Free Lebanon that the central bank had only $14 billion in foreign exchange reserves left.
