Mexican president says he will not renew governor’s mandate

President questioned why central bank could not transfer executive 2020 operational profits

Mexico’s president Andrés Manuel López Obrador ruled out a second term for central bank governor Alejandro Díaz de León on May 21.

Asked in his daily press conference about his plans for the central bank, López Obrador said he will not reappoint the head of the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) once his term in office expires on December 31, 2021.

Talking about the next governor, López Obrador said this person “is going to be an economist with a social dimension, very much in favour of moral economics”
