Argentina requests new IMF programme

Government and central bank say economic stabilisation is not possible without recovery

Argentina’s government requested a new support programme from the International Monetary Fund on August 26.

President Alberto Fernández’s administration issued a statement, saying that it had told the IMF that economic stabilisation would not be possible without economic recovery. The IMF agreed its largest-ever programme, a $57 billion standby arrangement (SBA) package, with the Argentine government led by Fernández’s predecessor Mauricio Macri in 2018.
