IMF agrees aid for small Southern African countries

IMF says Eswatini and Lesotho face major challenges from pandemic and structural problems

The International Monetary Fund has agreed emergency finance packages for two small Southern African countries to help them deal with the coronavirus’s economic consequences.

The IMF will send around $49 million to Lesotho and $110 million to Eswatini, it announced on July 29. The aid amounts to 100% of the IMF’s maximum yearly quota for Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, but only 50% of that for Lesotho.
