Senior policy-makers differ on future of global monetary system

Trichet, Lipton and Reinhart debate whether SDR could play a bigger role in global stability

The international monetary system needs fundamental reforms, senior current and former global policy-makers said in Paris today (July 16).

Speakers at a conference organised by the Banque de France on the Bretton Woods system’s 75th anniversary disagreed on what these reforms should be. There was notable disagreement on whether the International Monetary Fund’s special drawing right (SDR) could play a much greater role in the global system.
