Belize starts charging banks for payment processing

Central bank had previously shouldered the cost of the payment system

The Central Bank of Belize began charging banks for its core payment systems today (July 1) to supplement the roughly B$800,000 (US$400,000) annual maintenance costs.

The central bank had previously covered the expenses itself, but following a pricing study conducted last year it has opted to recover some of the costs from the private sector.

The fees will go towards helpdesk support, performing quarterly security patching and updates, and maintaining user accounts, profiles, and tokens, among
