Irish finance minister seeks candidates for governor role

Senior civil servant seen as strong contender but has been criticised for pre-crisis optimism

Ireland’s finance ministry has invited “expressions of interest” from candidates to become the country’s next central bank governor.

The Central Bank of Ireland’s current governor Philip Lane was confirmed as a member of the European Central Bank’s governing council on March 22. Lane will be the first Irish citizen to hold an executive-level position at the ECB. He will almost certainly take over as the ECB’s de facto chief economist when Peter Praet retires at the end of May.
