The long-running trial of a former governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus accused of taking bribes in office took a dramatic turn today (March 19).

Christodoulos Christodoulou served a five-year term as CBC governor from 2002 until 2007. He is facing charges of corruption, money-laundering and abuse of office, over allegations that he received a €1 million ($1.1 million) bribe while he was governor. The charges relate to the 2013 failure of the island’s second-biggest bank.
