Philip Lane is now almost certain to become the European Central Bank’s next chief economist, after no other candidates were nominated by their governments before the deadline closed today (January 31).

Central Bank of Ireland (CBI) governor Lane was nominated for a seat on the ECB’s governing council, in effect taking up the chief economist’s role, by the Irish government on January 2. Peter Praet will step down from the council at the end of May, after serving as chief economist for eight
