Incoming Mexican president nominates close adviser as deputy governor

Left-wing economist has publicly defended central bank independence

The incoming Mexican president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, nominated his former economic spokesperson as deputy governor of the Bank of Mexico on November 26.

The nominee, Gerardo Esquivel, worked in Lopez Obrador’s presidential campaign until the elections earlier this year. The former mayor of Mexico City won the presidency after obtaining 53% of the votes in the first round of the electoral process on July 1.
