Latvian prosecutor charges central bank governor with corruption

Bank making accusations was closed by regulators in 2016

Latvia’s central bank governor will stand trial on charges of soliciting bribes, the country’s state prosecutor announced, as it emerged the bank that accused him of wrongdoing was itself closed on regulators’ instructions.

Ilmārs Rimšēvičs was arrested on February 17 by officers from Latvia’s anti-corruption bureau, Knab, and questioned for two days. In a statement on June 28, the state prosecutor’s office said Rimšēvičs would now be tried on bribery charges.
