BoE’s chief economist joins minority in calling for rate rise

Monetary policy committee lowers threshold for reducing debt holdings

The Bank of England’s chief economist joined those calling for interest rates to rise at its latest monetary policy committee (MPC) meeting, as the bank lowered its threshold for reducing its stock of debt.   

Andrew Haldane, along with long-standing hawks Michael Saunders and Ian McCafferty, voted to raise the BoE’s rate to 0.75% today (June 20).  

The remaining six members voted to leave the rate on hold at 0.5%.

All committee members voted unanimously to maintain the stock of UK government
