Bank of Mexico admits $15.2 million went missing in cyber heist

Central bank says customers’ accounts were not penetrated

The Bank of Mexico revealed 300 million pesos ($15.2 million) went missing following a cyber attack on the nation’s interbank payment system earlier this month, revising its initial comments that no money had been taken.

In its latest communiqué dated May 16, the central bank revealed 300 million pesos had been syphoned from five commercial banks, but maintained no funds had been taken from customer accounts. The central bank had initially stated only three banks had been affected.
