Argentina lifts target as inflation persists

IMF recommended keeping tighter monetary stance in latest report in December

The Argentine government has extended its timeframe for bringing down inflation as the economy grapples with a stronger peso and a big current account deficit.

The new inflation target for 2018 is 15%, falling to 10% in 2019 and 5% in 2020. The authorities had previously set a target of 8–12% for this year.

The decision comes after the administration missed its 2017 objective of 12–17%, with the International Monetary Fund estimating inflation at 23.6% for the year. The move is expected to
