No reason why central banks cannot be privatised, economists argue

Central banks may be better equipped to sustain market stability if privately owned, argues Juan Castañeda

The banking sector could be better regulated if central banks were privately owned, the director of the UK’s Institute of International Monetary Research has suggested.

At an event asking whether regulation has gone too far since the financial crisis, IIMR director Juan Castañeda looked back at the role played by central banks before 2008 and how their responsibilities have evolved over the years.
