Maldives’ governor resigns as country remains in crisis

Governor says she is stepping down to join her husband in New York

The governor of the central bank of the Maldives has resigned, citing plans to move to New York, as the country remains in a political crisis.

The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) says in a statement issued on August 16 that governor Azeema Adam has resigned her post with immediate effect. She left to join her family in New York, where her husband, Ali Naseer Mohamed, is the country’s ambassador to the UN, the statement says.
