UK’s Royal Mint challenges coin-note boundary

Director for circulating coin claims new feature will allow new £1 coin to challenge low-denomination banknotes in terms of security

A novel “ground-breaking” security feature being used for the UK’s new £1 coin is pushing innovation at the coin-note boundary, the UK Royal Mint’s director for circulating coin has claimed.

Speaking on the sidelines of Central Banking’s 2017 Spring Seminar series, Andrew Mills spoke about how coin innovation would push the security of coinage to a “whole new level”, ultimately challenging low-denomination banknotes.
