All eyes on Italy as EBA prepares to release stress test results

Markets may also focus on Portugal and Austria

The European Banking Authority (EBA) will publish the results of its latest round of stress tests tonight (28 July) at 9pm London time, once European financial markets close for the weekend.

The banking sector in Italy is the most likely to be at the centre of any fallout, several observers agree. Italian banks have been hit by large and sustained share-price falls this year, driven by concerns over high levels of non-performing loans (NPLs) across the sector, in particular at Monte dei Paschi
