Early contenders emerge as Irish governor announces departure

Candidates already emerging to succeed Central Bank of Ireland governor

Central Bank of Ireland governor Patrick Honohan today (May 1) revealed his intention to step down early from the role, triggering speculation as to possible successors.

At a press conference held to launch the central bank's annual report, Honohan said he would retire later this year, a little before the end of his seven-year term, which was due to finish in September 2016.

In his opening remarks the governor emphasised his achievements to date, implying he would hand the reins to his successor
