Robin Leigh-Pemberton, the Bank of England governor between 1983 and 1993 who became Lord Kingsdown after his retirement from the bank, died last night.

Leigh-Pemberton steered the UK economy through a turbulent 10 years characterised by a period of rapid economic growth but which also included 'Black Wednesday', the day in September 1992 when the British government was forced to withdraw the pound from the European Exchange Rate mechanism (ERM).
