Cyprus deputy sacked after two months

The Central Bank of Cyprus' first deputy governor in nearly 50 years was sacked today, after his appointment to the job was deemed unconstitutional.

Spyros Stavrinakis was appointed to the post – which had lain vacant since the central bank was established in 1963 – in February 2013, by the then president of Cyprus Dimitris Christofias, just weeks before his term in office was due to end.

Christofias's replacement, Nicos Anastasiades, was an outspoken critic of the appointment when in opposition
