Serbian governor quits as government faces pressure over new law

The governor of the National Bank of Serbia (NBS), Dejan Šoškić, has resigned amid controversy over proposals by the new Serbian government to amend the central bank law. Both the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and European Commission have criticised the proposals.

Šoškić quit following sustained pressure from the government. In July, he resisted calls for him to leave, saying "there is no reason for me to resign and I am not considering such a move at all." The proposed amendments however
