Questions raised over new Central Bank of Tunisia governor

The new governor of the Central Bank of Tunisia, Chedly Ayari, began his term of office today (July 26), after the Tunisian government sacked Mustapha Kamel Nabli, the previous Tunisian governor.

The hasty appointment of Ayari, 79, has caused some alarm. Philippe Dauba-Pantanacce, a senior economist at Standard Chartered responsible for Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa, said: "Ayari has been a controversial choice both because of his age and his involvement in the previous regime."
