Canada suspends involvement in China-based bank

Former official says AIIB is controlled by the Chinese Communist party

The Canadian finance minister announced on June 14 that her government “will immediately halt all government-led activity” at a China-based multilateral lender.

The move follows the resignation of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank’s (AIIB) chief communications officer, who claimed it “is dominated by Communist party members”.

Finance minister Chrystia Freeland said she had ordered “an immediate review of the allegations raised and of Canada’s involvement in the AIIB”. She warned it was
