BoE's Gieve on economic cycles

Sir John Gieve, the deputy governor at the Bank of England responsible for financial stability, on Thursday night made his first speech since announcing he would step down.

Sir John made no mention of his decision to quit the Bank, though he did tell the North East Chamber of Commerce that "things have certainly changed in the year since your chief executive asked me to speak here this evening."

He told the audience that though the Bank could not shield British business from developments abroad
