BoE's Gieve calls for bigger buffers

Regulation must temper the pro-cyclicality of the credit cycle, said Sir John Gieve, a deputy governor at the Bank of England.

"We need to consider again how far we can make our regulatory regime for capital and liquidity counter cyclical," Sir John said.

Basel II was a "step in the right direction in many ways" but was not ideal because "it still has known pro-cyclical features which we need to address." If these features could not be addressed successfully, an alternative may be to require
