UK: Trichet says confidence key to euro

Bank of France Governor Jean-Claude Trichet said on Feb 21, 2001 confidence was key when policymakers spoke of a strong euro. Trichet in an interview with CNN suggested that his comments on a strong euro did not necessarily conflict with U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill's recent remarks confirming Washington's strong dollar policy.

"When you are speaking of currencies, confidence is of the essence," Trichet said in an interview with CNN. "When we say a strong euro is in the interest of Europe
