ECB open to above-target inflation – Lagarde

President lays out strategy review goals, hinting approach could bring ECB closer to the Fed

The European Central Bank will study the possibility of allowing inflation to rise above target, said president Christine Lagarde at the ECB and its Watchers XXI conference today (September 30).

As the ECB has just resumed its strategy review, which will focus on redefining the central bank’s inflation target, Lagarde weighed the virtue of permitting higher inflation to offset periods below the policy goal.

“The usefulness of such an approach could be examined,” she said.
