Papua New Guinea police use pandemic law after dispute causes fuel shortages

Papua New Guinea’s police commissioner has ordered the central bank to provide foreign exchange to the country’s main fuel importer.

Authorities intervened after a dispute between the central bank and Puma Energy PNG forced the latter to implement fuel rationing on July 19. 

The Papua New Guinea police said its chief had issued the order under the National Pandemic Act, passed in 2020. This allows the police commissioner to issue directives to other state institutions in his capacity as
