Ethiopia’s central bank launches digital payments strategy

NBE pledges to launch retail real-time payments system and consider charges on cash use

The National Bank of Ethiopia has launched an ambitious three-year strategy to modernise and expand the country’s digital payments infrastructure.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has dramatically heightened the urgency of digitising payments in Ethiopia,” the NBE said in a strategy document published on July 16.

“Digital payments increase the speed, efficiency and accuracy of payments, and vastly reduce the need for in-person cash transactions requiring physical contact.”
