The Federal Reserve's Beige Book, published Wednesday, showed that the economy had continued to improve, with the recovery spreading further than at the time of the previous report.

"Reports from the 12 Federal Reserve Districts indicated that while economic activity remains at a low level, conditions have improved modestly further, and those improvements are broader geographically than in the last report," said the report that draws on on information collected on or before 4 January.
