Bank of Portugal - Annual Report 2006

Buoyed by exports and improvements in the labour market, Portugal's economic performance in 2006 was an improvement on recent years.

The budget deficit declined considerably and reforms introduced in 2006 looks set to improve public accounts in future years.

But the Portuguese economy did not grow at a fast enough rate to catch up with other members of the eurozone. And the upswing in this business cycle has led to less impressive growth than in previous cycles.
