Ingves calls for consistency in risk weights for credible capital ratios

The credibility of banks' model-based capital ratios – and therefore the confidence of external parties that they can be meaningfully compared – are at stake if regulators do not deal with inconsistencies in banks' risk-weighted asset calculations, according to Stefan Ingves, chairman of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) and governor of the Sveriges Riksbank.

At a conference today in Cape Town organised by the BCBS and the South African Reserve Bank, Ingves said recent studies on
