Debt issuance powers remain key attribute of most central banks

Proportion of non-debt issuing institutions narrows year-on-year to 6%

A clear majority of central banks are vested with authority to issue debt in their countries, the Monetary Policy Benchmarks 2023 find.

The data this year reflects a higher proportion of institutions with the attribute, at 94% of institutions, compared with 87% in the 2022 benchmark.

Only two (6%) central banks say they lack powers to carry out the exercise, a decrease from the 13% previously reported.
