Central banks report increase in value of banknotes in circulation

Average volume of notes declines by 2.9% year on year

The average value of banknotes in circulation continued to climb between the 2022 and 2023 fiscal years, the Currency Benchmarks 2023 find.

Average banknotes value among 30 respondents increased by 3%, from $16 billion in 2022 to $16.6 billion in 2023. The data varied widely across jurisdictions, with an upper-middle income country from Asia-Pacific having the lowest figure at $1.8 million. An upper-middle income country from the Americas had the highest value at $143.5 billion.
