Turkey reveals new currency symbol


The Central Bank of Turkey on March 1 hosted a ceremony to unveil the new symbol for the Turkish lira.

Prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan revealed the symbol at a press conference alongside central bank governor Erdem Başçı and deputy prime minister Ali Babacan.

The symbol is likened to an anchor, merged with a double-crossed letter 't'. In a speech at the event, Başçı said the anchor represented the currency was a "safe harbour", while the two rising diagonal lines through the 't' represented
