Colombia central bank launches new COP1,000 bill

COLOMBIA - Colombia's central bank on Tuesday launched a new 1,000 peso bill ($1=2271.50) to complement the coins of that denomination in circulation already.

The notes commemorate Liberal leader Jorge Eliecer Gaitan, who was assassinated in 1948.

Forgeries of the COP1,000 coins are common.

Central bank officials were not available to comment on whether the new bills are a response to this problem.
