Brief History

Established in 1880 as Banca Natională a României (National Bank of Romania). In November 1948 its name changed to Banca Republicii Populare Române, Banca de Stat (The Bank of People’s Republic of Romania, the State Bank). In July 1968 foreign exchange operations were taken over by the newly formed Romanian Bank for Foreign Trade.
