Getting back on track

The global financial system derailed in August last year and requires urgent attention. However, before proposing solutions and suggesting policy and regulatory responses, it is necessary to fully understand the nature and causes of the current problems. In this article I consider three central causes: the abundance of global liquidity and the weakening of risk assessment, the excesses and abuse of securitisation, and the regulatory environment.
