Riksbank proposes changes to inflation target

Central bank plans to use variable to avoid short-term distortions, and to reinstate band around target

Sveriges Riksbank today (May 16) unveiled proposals that could see it move to a new inflation target variable and reinstate a band around the target.

The Swedish central bank proposes replacing its consumer price index (CPI)-based target with one at the same 2% level, but based on CPIF inflation, which assumes fixed interest rates. At the same time, it would add a “variation band” of plus/minus 1 percentage point as a communication tool designed to highlight the difficulty of remaining exactly
