Brainard turns cautious on inflation concerns

Lack of wage growth and lower than expected inflation data could slow further monetary easing, says Fed governor

Conflicting data on the US labour market and inflation have prompted one of the governors of the Federal Reserve to issue cautious remarks about the future path of monetary policy.

In a speech given in New York on May 30, Lael Brainard acknowledged the US labour market is strengthening, but said the risk of lower inflation is a concern.

“It is worth asking whether we should be worried that history will inevitably repeat itself. The truth is, we cannot know for sure,” she said. Recent inflation
