BoJ keeping options open on new technologies

Nakaso says the Bank of Japan is not planning to issue a digital currency any time soon

The Bank of Japan (BoJ) does not plan on issuing digital currencies "at this stage", but is open to exploiting advanced technologies in the future, deputy governor Hiroshi Nakaso said today (May 12).

Nakaso noted the discussion in the central banking community around issuing digital currencies – though no central banks have committed to the idea. The BoJ is nonetheless interested in the potential application of new technologies to financial market infrastructure (FMI).
