Fed’s Brainard sees scope for ‘watchful waiting’

Governor says there may be room to ‘support further healing’ in the labour market

Federal Reserve governor Lael Brainard made a case for "watchful waiting" on the Federal Open Markets Committee (FOMC) - but stressed an increase in interest rates "could come before the end of the year" if the labour market continues to strengthen.

Speaking at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC, on June 2, Brainard argued "there may be additional room to support further healing in the labour market" beyond what is suggested by the unemployment rate.
