Zeti: Sukuk market has potential to fund infrastructure projects

Zeti Akhtar Aziz, governor of Bank Negara Malaysia, believes the sukuk market – the Islamic equivalent of bonds – has "become a potentially important new source of funding" for infrastructure projects.

"Given the sheer size of these projects, equity and government budgets cannot be the only source of financing for this next phase of economic growth and industrialisation in our regions," said Zeti in a speech at the 10th World Islamic Economic Forum yesterday in Dubai.
