ECB's Cœuré says euro members 'not strong enough to survive on their own'
The eurozone needs "solidarity mechanisms" for extreme events that are out of reach of national policies, but "beyond that there is no strong case for further fiscal centralisation", European Central Bank executive board member Benoît Cœuré said today in Frankfurt.
"We know what has worked in the euro area: an allocation of tasks based on the primacy of price stability. And we know what has not worked: a lack of stability orientation in other policy areas," he added.
