A working paper published by the National Bank of Belgium studies the work of Robert Triffin (1911–93), an economist who produced pioneering work on currency unions and on the role of central banks in developing economies.
In The European Payments Union and the origins of Triffin's regional approach towards international monetary integration, Ivo Maes and Ilaria Pasotti look at how Triffin developed the concept of the "region" in economic analysis.
